Simple Ways to Stay Alert on the Road
The best strategy is simple: sleep enough before you drive, avoid driving when you’re already tired, and stop regularly on long trips. The tips below help, but none of them replace those basics.
Get 7 to 9 Hours of Sleep
Most people need between seven and nine hours of sleep each day. This is not just the night before a long trip.
A week of five to six hours a night builds a sleep debt that is difficult to clear quickly, and it raises your crash risk even on short trips.
Think of it like a bank account. Every short night puts you in debt, and you can’t pay it back in one sleep.
Avoid Driving During Your Normal Sleeping Hours
If your body would normally be asleep between midnight and 6 am, driving in that window dramatically raises your risk. Plan trips to avoid those hours where possible.
Take a Break Every Two Hours
Get out of the car. Walk around. Have a drink of water. Even a short stop gives your brain a reset. A 15-minute break every two hours is the recommended standard.
Share the Driving on Long Trips
If someone else in the car is licensed and alert, swap the wheel. Even an hour as a passenger gives your body and mind a chance to recover.
Stop and Take a 15 to 20 Minute Power Nap
